Capital One today announced that two-time NCAA All-American and 12-time MLB All-Star Barry Larkin will join the Capital One Cup Advisory Board, an award honoring the best men’s and women’s Division I college athletic programs in the country. While playing baseball for the University of Michigan from 1983-85, Larkin was a two-time Big Ten Player of the Year and took the Wolverines to two College World Series. He is also on the class of 2012’s National Baseball Hall of Fame ballot, which will be revealed on January 9.

Larkin, a current ESPN baseball analyst, joins the Capital One Cup Advisory Board, which is comprised of former NCAA student-athletes and current broadcasters that embody success, integrity, leadership and a commitment to excellence. The Capital One Cup Advisory Board includes: Rece Davis, Clark Kellogg, Lisa Leslie, Doug Flutie, Brandi Chastain and Jennie Finch.

In his role as an advisor, Larkin will educate the sports community and fans about the program and help promote the positive values of college athletics. The Capital One Cup is celebrating its second year and, again this year, the winning schools will take home a combined $400,000 in student-athlete scholarships. The winners will be announced at the ESPYs in July.

“Barry embodies the highest in athletic and academic achievement,” said Capital One Chief Marketing Officer Bill McDonald. “He’ll make an outstanding Advisory Board member, particularly because he understands the importance of excellence on and off the field, as well as the sacrifices that student-athletes make as they strive to be the best.”

“I’m honored to be a part of the Capital One Cup, knowing that baseball plays such an integral part in crowning the men’s champion,” said Larkin, noting that Florida’s finish in the College World Series last year elevated the Gators from No. 4 to the top spot in the final Capital One Cup men’s standings, “I look forward to returning to Omaha for this year’s College World Series this year as a representative of the Capital One Cup and, hopefully, seeing another down-to-the wire finish for the trophy.”
