Reds Flex Offensive Muscles, Blast Brewers 12-4

Folks, this is the Cincinnati Reds team that I am accustomed to. Tuesday night found the Reds at Miller Park taking on the Milwaukee Brewers, a daunting challenge keeping in mind what type of team Milwaukee has.

Early on, it didn’t look good for the Reds as Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo was mowing them down and even hit a homer along the way. But the Reds overcame that little issue and pounded out 19 hits, chasing Gallardo and crusied to an easy 12-4 annihilation of Milwaukee 12-4.

How dominant were the Reds’ bats? Consider this: the top four bats in their lineup (Brandon Phillips, Orlando Cabrera, Joey Votto and Scott Rolen) combined for finish the game 15-for-22 with eight runs scored and seven RBIs. That’s domination, folks.

Gallardo lasted all of three innings, leaving after Phillips had a two-run single which put Cincinnati ahead 6-3. but to be fair, Reds starter Edinson Volquez didn’t are much better than Gallardo as he didn’t quite make the four-inning mark. But for what Volquez didn’t provide on the mound, the Reds would make up for in offense.

Cincinnati exploded in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively as Rolen  drove home Votto with a RBI single whileRamon hernandez drove home two with a double to deep left-center. The seventh would find Cabrera bringing home Phillips while Rolen hit a sacrifice fly, driving in Cabrera.

Volquez’s time on the mound was brief as he went just 3 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits, walking four, striking out three while giving up HRs to Rickie Weeks and Gallardo. Logan Ondrusek (2-0) picked up the win in relief, going 2 1/3, walking one and striking out three. Bill Bray, Jordan Smith and Carlos Fisher combined to pitch three scoreless innings.

Phillips, Votto and Rolen each had four – count them – four hits apiece, with three RBIs for Rolen, two for Phillips; Hernandez also drove in three.

Cincinnati and Milwaukee play again on Wednesday when Chris Narveson (8-6, 5.93 ERA) goes up aganst Travis Wood (0-1, 2.76 ERA).
