When: Saturday, July 10, 7:05 PM (ET)
Where: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, PA
Who: Roy Halladay (10-7, 2.33 ERA) vs. Travis Wood (0-0, 3.86 ERA)
It is a very rare occasion when the Cincinnati Reds’ relief corps has a meltdown very late in games where they seem to have a safe lead. Yet that is what happened Friday when the duo of Francisco Cordero and Arthur Rhodes combined to give up four runs, allowing the Philadelphia Phillies to edge the Reds 9-7 in 10 innings.
Saturday should be interesting as Roy Halladay and rookie Travis Wood hook up at Citizens Bank Park for Game 3 of their four-game series.
It was not that long ago – June 30, to be exact – when the Reds touched up Holladay in the eighth inning, allowing Cincinnati to edge the Phillies 4-3, so it isn’t like Halladay cannot be beaten. But the difference being same pitcher, different ballpark and Reds lineup.
When the Reds are at the plate:
With Scott Rolen sitting this one out, I would suspect that the reliance on the home run will not be as high; however, having Miguel Cairo in the lineup eases that burden to a degree. Brandon Phillips has done well against Halladay (.400 lifetime) as has Jay Bruce. I look for Bruce, Joey Votto, Corky Miller – yes, Corky Miller! – and Drew Stubbs to produce Saturday.
When the Reds are on the mound:
This is one of those games where because Wood has never faced the Phillies before, the playing field has been leveled, which may actually work to the Reds’ advantage. Nonetheless, he will ned to be wary of Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth, Shane Victorino and probably Jimmy Rollins. Despite Philly’s troubles, their offense is still dangerous.
The Reds Report’s Projected Lineup:
- Brandon Phillips
- Orlando Cabrera
- Joey Votto
- Jonny Gomes
- Jay Bruce
- Drew Stubbs
- Miguel Cairo
- Corky Miller
- Travis Wood
