During Friday’s game between the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, it appeared that the 40,961 in attendance were going to be in or a treat with a pitchers battle.
It would be that way until the top of the seventh wen nine Reds would cross the plate, chasing Cubs starter Ryan Dempster and delivering Cincinnati a 12-0 gift over Chicago.
Dempster had allowed only a pair of hits – including a solo home run by Brandon Phillips – in keeping the Cubs to within 1-0 until the top of the seventh.
That’s when the walks and subsequent scoring barrage would begin as Reds starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo walked with the bases loaded, scoring Jonny Gomes, then Phillips walked – also with the bases loaded – which would bring home Jay Bruce, putting Cincinnati ahead 3-0. Ramon Hernandez got to first on a passed ball.
Scott Rolen than hit a two-run single, scoring Arroyo and Phillips, then Gomes doubled to deep center, scoring Joey Votto and Rolen; Hernandez capped the Reds scorefest with a double to deep-left center, bringing home Gomes and Bruce and padding Cincinnati’s impregnable lead to 10-0. Votto would end the ambush with HR to right-center, making it 12-0.
Arroyo pitched a decent game as he went six innings, allowing just two hits, walking two while striking out three. Logan Andrusek and Micah Owings pitched three perfect innings in relief.
Six Reds drove home two runs apiece, including Phillips, Votto, Rolen, Gomes and Hernandez; Arroyo even drove a runner home.
Cincinnati hopes to take three straight from Chicago when they take on the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Saturday afternoon. Randy Wells (3-6, 4.96 ERA) gets the start for the Cubs while Johnny Cueto (8-2, 3.74 ERA) starts for the Reds.
