Cueto Saves Reds’ Road Trip, Blanks A’s 3-0

The Cincinnati Reds have had one strange road trip. They first blow into Seattle to take on the Mariners and get swept, then they fly south to take on the Oakland A’s for a 3-game series. They won the first two games because of their bats and pitching.

Enter Johnny Cueto into the equation as the Reds and A’s got together for the third and final game of their series at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Wednesday afternoon.

Cueto pitched like he was in mid-season form, pitching seven innings while Jay Bruce drove home a pair of runs, enabling Cincinnati to bum-rush Oakland 3-0 and sweep their series and go .500 on their West Coast road trip.

Bruce put the Reds ahead to stay in the first inning when he lined a two-run RBI single to right field, scoring Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips while Jonny Gomes capped the victory with a RBI double, bringing home Votto.

Cueto pitched very well in going seven innings, allowing seven hits, walking two and striking out four. Nick Masset and Francisco Cordero combined to pitch two perfect innings, with Cordero notching his 19th save.

In addition to Bruce’s three hits and two RBIs, the trio of Miguel Cairo, Phillips and Gomes each had two hits.

Cincinnati gets a day off before they return to Great American Ball Park to host the Cleveland Indians on Friday night. Aaron Laffey (0-1, 5.61 ERA) gets the start for the Indians while the Reds counter with Sam LeCure (1-4, 4.50 ERA).
