Even an extra day of rest for Cincinnati Reds starter Johnny Cueto provided no added benefit for either the team or Cueto.
Adrian Gonzalez homered in the first, which led to additional runs on the fourth and sixth innings; meanwhile, the Reds were, for the most part, silent at the plate as they mustered only four hits, enabling San Diego to blank Cincinnati 5-0 in front of 19,999 at Great American Ball Park.
The Padres started the scoring with a homer by Gonzalez in the first; later in the fourth, Chase Headley hit a double and Will Venable walked. An out later, Yorvit Torrealba lined a double into the left-center gap, scoring Headley and Venable. The sixth would nearly mirror the fourth as Venable followed Headley’s single with a HR into the right-field seats, making it 6-0.
Let’s also factor in the running errors by the Reds. Both Brandon Phillips and Jonny Gomes ended rallies in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively as both were caught stealing. Also, after a Johnny Cueto bunt that eluded Padres starting pitcher Wade LeBlanc, Drew Stubbs followed with an infield single; however, Cueto assuming the inning was over, jogged to third only to be tagged out.
Cueto also strugled on the mound as he pitched six innings, allowing five runs on seven hits, walking one while striking out five and giving up two homers; Daniel Ray Herrera and Mike Lincoln combined to pitch three perfect innings.
Ryan Hanigan had a double while Darren Stubbs, Ramon Hernandez and Cueto had a single each.
Sunday marks Game 3 of this series as the Padres take on the Reds, with the first pitch scheduled for 1:10 PM (ET); Clayton Richard (0-2, 3.38 ERA) takes the mound for San Diego while Cincinnati will counter with Homer Bailey (0-1, 7.47 ERA).
