When you’re the Cincinnati Reds and you have some players set at certain positions, it makes it rather difficult for some of the lesser players who are either on the parent club or a minor leaguer looking to make an impact during spring training.
One such player is Yonder Alonso.
Mindful of Alonso’s itchiness to try and get out onto the playing field as much as possible, Reds general manager Walt Jocketty has said that Alonso would get some action at both third base and left field.
Dusty Baker put Alonso’s current situation into perspective, saying:
“I remember coming up as a kid, (the Giants) had Willie McCovey and Orlando Cepeda.”
“Both are in the Hall of Fame. Cepeda went to the outfield. You remember when the Cincinnati Reds had Lee May and Tony Perez? They had a similar problem. Tony went to third. Lee eventually got traded to Houston.
“That’s what happens. You hope not. But your options are pretty good if and when that time comes.”
Things over time while spring training will iron themselves out, whether it is an injury, a player having a godawful spring or other circumstances that warrant Alonso getting additional time out on the field.
Patience is a virtue, although Alonso is nearly 23 years old.
